Things don’t usually go well for Julian Waters. Although he’s a football player at USC, he barely gets any time of the field. He may have a sweet apartment near campus, but he’s embarrassingly behind on rent. It doesn’t help knowing that his parents are struggling back in Pittsburgh to pay for his tuition. Places aren’t looking to hire a student with limited availability, but Julian’s roommate doesn’t care for the excuses. He gets that he needs to pay his fair share, but the constant reminder of how he’s not contributing isn’t helping – it’s driving him insane. The only constant in his life seems to be Alice, but she’s strictly in it for the sex, wanting no emotional involvement whatsoever. It may sound nice on paper, but Julian isn’t entirely opposed to having a friend in all of this. When he stumbles across a modeling casting call online, Julian’s eyes go wide at the $1,000 per gig payoff – that is until he realizes just what type of ‘male modeling’ he’d be doing. Gay porn is out of the question for Julian. First off, he’s straight, and second, there’s no amount of money anyone could pay him to have sex with someone on camera, no matter the gender. Then again, they are paying a thousand dollars a video? How hard could it be? Maybe an audition could change his mind. “August Nights” is a 30,000-word novella written by Nellie Christine.

Only the occasional editing slip-up, like typos and missing words, which was good. There wasn't really much in the way of character development, but I liked both MCs anyway. The writing itself tended to be a bit sophomoric; ex: "they had seen most of the games and he was in like three of them." Like? Really?

As for the plot, I liked it for its originality in how they got together. What did not really make so much sense to me was the whole best friend aspect. Julian had dated Kyla for a short period, maybe a year, in high school and they never got any further than going on dates and heavy petting. The fact that she still hadn't gotten over him 3 years later was a personal problem. Julian had moved on long ago, just because she continued to pine away did not mean he "belonged" to her, as the book kept saying. The drama concerning keeping the secret from her and then her completely over the top reaction could have been left out. There was enough drama with Julian keeping things from his roommate, his family, and anyone who might possibly see the videos online. Other than that it was pretty decent and I liked it. Has an HFN ending.

3.5 stars

This is my first book by the author, but when I read the blurb, I knew I just had to read it! Julian's in a bind for money, so he decides to do gay porn instead of straight porn because it pays more. He's always identified as a straight man, so this is not the easiest thing for him to do. When he goes in for his audition, he's surprised by who is his co-star. August isn't expecting to see his best friend's ex-boyfriend at his audition. The two almost don't go through with it, but once they do, they have undeniable chemistry. The only inconsistent thing for me was Julian identified himself as straight, but at the end, he says that he's only now admitting his attraction to men. The story ends with a HFN, but since they are in their early 20s, I can live with it! I wouldn't mind reading more about them in the future!
This is only the second book by this author, but it's another good one that made me grateful that I've discovered her. She has a writing style that's contemp, fluid and very readable, so I've flown through both her tales.

In this, we have a couple of guys who'd known each other from their hometown auditioning to be porn actors simply because they need the money - one's gay and the other is straight, and happens to be the ex of the gay guy's best friend. So, yes, two reasons why they shouldn't be doing porn together, right? But, they have their first scene with each other and it's clear that one isn't as straight as he thought...

What I liked about this is that the author kept it real - the guys needed cash, the porn job paid not too shabbily and they ended up in scenes with other guys, and both were realistic about this, and both hid behind the porn instead of admitting that there might be more than their hometown in common.

The tale ends realistically, with a scene that could have had others blushing, but these guys toughed it out and dealt with the consequences. I didn't get a firm HEA in this book, which is normally a no-no in my romances, but, it worked for the guys to be starting out with something real, and it worked for me.

Nellie Christine is an author whose books I'll be looking out for.

ARC courtesy of the author for my reading pleasure.
This book was a quick and satisfying read. It's almost too quick because I want MORE! The characters are hot and also sweet--this author just has a way of making you root for the guys right away and just want to enjoy their story for as long as possible. I can tell a book is good if I keep stopping to figure out how many pages I have left to enjoy and man- I stopped more times than I can count on this one.
There is nothing like doing porno to bring former high school friends together. No pun intended.

Too bad broken friendships interfere. Can the mutual attraction overcome the challenge? A wonderful fast paced story of self-discovery and acceptance.
First - This was amazing. And I wanted more. And I read it in one sitting. I didn't want it to end. But at the same time for a novella I didn't feel like I missed out or got short changed on the story. I'm just gonna beg for a sequel lol. Do yourselves a favor and follow this author so you never miss out on her next books.
Julian Waters is as straight as they come, or is he? After living the life of a broke college student and constantly owing his roommate rent, Julian decides he's willing to do just about anything to earn cash. When he realizes there's big money to be made in the porn industry, he starts doing research. After realizing that doing gay porn would earn him even MORE money, he quickly decides to give it a shot. He reasons that being "gay for pay" can't be that hard, after all, sex is just sex!

August Andrews came to California with big dreams of acting and singing, but reality had other plans. When money gets tight for his parents back home, he decides to do anything to help. Even if that means signing up to do porn. It's just until he lands his big break, just a few shoots and then he's done. Sure, having sex with someone on camera may be awkward, but it's not a huge deal to him. However, being paired up with his best friends' ex is something August did NOT account for.

August Nights is a great story that will most definitely make you wish the story didn't have to end. The chemistry between Julian and August is so strong, making it impossible for these two to deny each other. Julian's journey of discovery is a learning experience that is very entertaining to read. Especially when August steps up to teach him a few things. You guys do not wanna miss out on this story. It is seriously addicting and you will absolutely fall in love with these two!

Great job with this one, Nellie! I loved Something Real and I adored August Nights too! Now I'm even more excited to see what you have in store for us with the upcoming Ride! If it's anything like these past two stories...bring it on.
