Books about a child's custody always worry me. In this story, that issue takes a back seat to a father making a home for his young son to support his being awarded custody, but his fears that he won't be successful take a backseat to his experiences at a kids' camp he'd attended as a teenager. Is he really a good guy? The person he has to convince isn't his son, but rather the person who sucked face with when he'd last attended the camp, but she doesn't trust that he won't leave like he had so many years earlier--for reasons she isn't privy to.The final complication, in the form of a smarmy article written about him in a celebrity rag that is full of inuendos and inaccuracies, threatens the custody issue, which finally is resolved. Happily. Whew.

With the death of his toddler's mother Robin, NHL superstar Sam Catalano changes his game plan. Instead of hockey, babes and endorsements; he plans to become a full-time dad. He buys Camp Overlook overlooking the Ontario side of the St. Lawrence as a home for him and two year old Casey as he has fond childhood memories of the place.
However, the only drawback besides Robin's Nova Scotia family, meddling social workers and court officials is the assistant director Libby Kovak. Sam and Libby were once a passionate entry, but though he wants a second time with the female he left behind years ago, his focus must be providing Casey with stability. However, both realizes they remain in love with each other; but though he changed his family plan to include a wife and mother, his first star refuses to allow him out of the penalty box.
A Better Father is an entertaining second chance at love family drama with a strong cast and no "forced" villains; as Sam and readers will realize that Robin's mom Sharon loves her grandchild. Though the engaging storyline goes as expected, fans will enjoy Sam's efforts to become A Better Father, person and lover.

This is a good book, very light read. Not too angst ridden, hero has trust issues, heroine has trust issues. They knew each other as teenagers, he broke up with her with no reason, she doesn't believe anybody can be trusted. He really did have a reason, a bad one, but a reason. Don't want to give away the secrets, they make the book interesting, then there was the BIG ending, and both the H and the h stop thinking about protecting their selves, and start thinking about what the other needs, and magic happens...sigh. It took a little too long to get to the secrets, and too short to forgive everything, really? but that can be forgiven, but it only gets 4 stars.
In her debut novel, Kris Fletcher writes with the skill and confidence of a multi-published writer. Her characters--especially Cosmo--are delightful. Sam was yummy and much deeper than I'd thought. As I read, I got really angry with him because I couldn't understand how he could have treated Casey as he did. However, Ms. Fletcher handles this well and makes Sam an admirable man. I loved the baby, the family, Casey and Sam. Because I was a camp counselor for years, I really enjoyed the setting. Good job! I highly recommend the book and look forward to all the others that are sure to come.
