Cobalt Slave eBook Jon Walker

Although some editors of traditional publishing claim that transitioning viewpoints cause a disconnection between the story and the reader, the way Walker progresses the story in a time-line orientation to translate the course of more than a century with different characters dealing with the various problems that all interconnect is amazing. It actually helps a reader who likes history-type character-centered narration to be pulled into the action and experience the negativity of the situation with the low-level citizen tragedies on one side compared to the over-indulgences of well-off citizens on the other side in this one colony.
The link to Earth is stated, but the colony that was left on its own without support has developed into something on separate ends of the spectrum that can be related to in our world. There are aspects of festering political intrigue, forced social standings, and blatant class inequality that dwells within the current situation centered on Cobalt needed for survival. The scientific elements of the colony planet, the known physiology of humans, and the psychological complexity of known types of people represented in the colony really is shown in a balanced pace that allows for continued suspense, radical need for change, and unforeseen reactions too.
I completely recommend this novel if you love intricately woven tapestries of action with diverse characters over a course of related transitions that make you question how much any side is right and how wrong any side can become before it’s too late for the people to stand up for what is right for the entire colony instead of just personal gain. Working people here will see themselves in this story. Impoverished people will find their group too. Even business-driven people will find their niche as well. There are good and bad people in each. What I want is MORE. A sequel is needed since this story leaves you at an inauguration of the possible.
Mr. Walker, please show us soon how this colony survives after being turned inside-out!

Cobalt Slave eBook Jon Walker Reviews

Frankly, the writing style feels underdeveloped and repetitive at times, but the story was immersive enough to overlook a few missteps. I'm personally chalking this up to the youth of the author. The interwoven perspectives drew a fascinating web of new world politics and although I don't feel a strong connection to any character in particular, I love the world the author has created and I feel invested in its future. Looking forward to book 2!
Exciting page turner. Tough to put down.
interesting premise. life is dependant on certain substances so i could see this happening. pretty exciting story!
This started out a bit slow, but started coming together about 40% through. This is a good first novel by a promising author. I agree with one of the other reviews that the ending felt a bit rushed, but overall I would recommend the book. It's a quick read and for the price (currently free to download) it is worth picking up.
JW has written a SyFy novel about the people who settle in a new planet, New Eden, where they become, primarily miners and secondary farmers. The first few years the split in the mining, cobalt, profit is equal, but the Corporation decides on bigger profit. The problems begin immediately. New Eden begins to determine how to change the outcome. This is an excellent read for the genre.....ER
A different take on science fiction. You have air, you have water, you have warp drive and you are good to go. Not so in this book. Just because you have landed on a planet with air and water, it does not mean that all the ingredients necessary for earth-based life are there. Unfortunately mankind will always use a scarcity as a means of control.
The book kept me engaged to see how this power struggle would play out.
To describe this book as science fiction is to do it an injustice. it is far more than that. It is a novel about politics, power, corruption, dictators, the privileged and the underclasses. It is a tale of the battle between the rulers and the oppressed. One might be forgiven for thinking that the science fiction description isn't relevant but that is certainly not the case. The plot is based firmly around the geology of a newly colonized planet and it is the alien environment that drives the story. Even better, the science on which the story is based is solid. Good science is the mark of good science fiction and the science is clearly well understood by the author.

Some have described the narrative as awkward or clunky. I would suggest that it is detailed and complete, leading the reader through technical and scientific issues carefully. It all helps to paint a picture of people struggling to survive and develop their world.

The book reaches an abrupt conclusion but the story is complete. The author wastes no words on an epilogue and it leaves me wanting more. At the time of writing, this is the only novel by Jon Walker. I hope and trust there will be more and I will certainly be reading all the fiction he cares to produce.
