Recently, a friend challenged me to read outside my normal favorite genres. Having read a couple of Lorrie Farrelly’s books, I accepted the challenge and picked up The Guardian’s Angel. Read on for my thoughts!

Synopsis (from the author): When nobody knows what to do with a troubled, damaged kid, it’s time to call Elizabeth Driscoll. A wary, vulnerable, unusually intuitive young woman, Libby has a knack for helping children that others have given up on.

Certainly nobody knows what to do with Tommy Madden, least of all his fiercely devoted guardian, Seattle Police Detective J.D. McCammon. McCammon believes the autistic little boy witnessed a double murder: his mother and his father, the city’s District Attorney. J.D. is determined to help and protect Tommy at all costs, and somehow, find a way to communicate with him.

When Tommy’s life is threatened by the corrupt organization that killed his parents, J.D. and Libby take him on a desperate and dangerous flight to safety. They must place their trust in one another to escape a relentless evil that threatens not only their lives, but that of the child they’ve both come to love.

On the run, Libby and J.D. are tested to the limits of their courage and resolve. They discover an intimate and mystifying bond that will either drive them apart, or become their greatest source of strength and passion.

What I liked: The Guardian’s Angel drew me in from the start. Libby’s trauma from an attack and the unexpected mental interaction between her and JD sets the tone for the story. With the safety of Tommy at risk, Libby and JD embark on a dangerous mission to save him. But enough, no spoilers from me. Let it suffice to say, the ending is satisfying and the sacrifices made by all tie the tale together nicely. The book has romance, intrigue, suspense, and enough action to keep the pages turning.

What I didn’t like: About my only criticism of the book is the constant indecision of both Libby and JD to accept their feelings about each other. It frustrated me a reader for the characters to vacillate as long as they did.

Overall Impression: The Guardian’s Angel is well written, full of compelling characters with plenty of angst to go around, suspense, intrigue, and sacrifice. I recommend this book to romance and chick-lit aficionados. I would also recommend it to anyone who simply likes a good read!

Although it isn't probable this warm and tense story grabs you right from the beginning and doesn't let you go till the end.
The focus is on something that can and does happen to our children sometimes. They may be born with a disability. But most disabilities can be overcome with love and lots of patience!
I read a lot of books, and this one had 2 quite unique elements built into the story, which added depth and interest. At the same time, the author maintained and developed a nicely-paced blend of romance and suspense, both building well and concluding well. Good characters, logical progression. I recommend this book.
A surprisingly well developed short story. I normally don't care for books with a 'chase' theme, as they have a tendency to drag on, but the action was well-paced, the characters were likeable, and the plot kept me intrigued. My only dislike was the insta-love between the protagonists (Yeah, novella, I understand things need to move along quickly, but I didn't feel it). Great read, and I enjoyed the author's writing style.
This is the fourth book I have read by this author and each time I read one, I think "Wow, how can I like this one even more than the last??" and yet I find myself with a new favorite each time I finish. "The Guardian's Angel" was a well-written, fast-paced thriller than kept me reading page after page. I read it in one day because I could not put it down! I loved that this novel had a little bit of everything adventure, action, mystery, romance and a bit of the supernatural. I also really enjoyed that autism played a huge role in this story, since I have several friends who have children living with autism and know the struggles they face on a day-to-day basis. Very rarely does an author tackle such a difficult and highly-sensitive subject, yet Ms. Farrelly does it with perfect awareness, respectfulness and education. The characters in this novel are developed exceptionally well and you find yourself rooting for and caring about them almost immediately. The story moves at a perfect pace and visits many locations so that you not only get a wonderful tour of the characters' lives, but also a tour of the West Coast. I highly recommend this novel, along with Ms. Farrelly's previous three and can't wait for the next novel to be published! Brava, Ms. Farrelly!!!!
I think the reason I gave it 3 stars was bc the storyline didn't work for me. Had the potential to be great but some things I didn't get. 1. JD and Libby being able to talk with each other without speaking? Huh? I don't get it. Not my kind of reading. 2. The whole fight scene with the bad guy Chen. What the heck was that about them using their powers to make him kill himself. I'm assuming I read that right. Sorry for spoilers but some of it was just bizarre. This could have made a good read without all that. Others obviously found it great. I didn't care for it.
In the Guardian's Angel, by Lorrie Farrelly, Libby Driscoll has managed to put her life back together after a severe trauma. During that dark time, she had crossed paths with J. D. McCammon. At the time, Libby felt a strange connection with the police officer.

As a licensed therapist in Pediatric Clinical Psychology, Libby is trained to work with troubled children. When J. D. asks her to help a child who saw his parents murdered, Libby's kind heart goes out to the five-year-old boy.

J. D. knows he can be difficult. He manages to either scare people or make them mad. But now he needs Libby's help.

Fighting his strange, compelling attraction to Libby, J. D. convinces her to provide therapy services to Tommy. With the gang of drug/art dealers suspected of killing the boy's parents also after Tommy, J. D. and Libby must work together to help Tommy as well as keep him safe.

Using a great descriptive style, Ms. Farrelly has written a wonderful story not only of danger and impending doom, but also a love story liberally sprinkled with humor.
