I've had this book on my Goodreads wish-to-read list for a while because it's raved about and tops quite a few Must-Read listopia lists. So, when I saw it come up on the KDP free list I grabbed it. Honestly, I'm not seeing what everyone loves so much. It's like one long, protracted rape scene. It felt like every vampire and trader in Vamp City must be walking around primed and ready, constantly on the lookout for any female that they are somehow obligated to assault on sight. Seriously, I don't think the book goes 5 pages without someone being molested in some fashion. People are killed, tortured and raped endlessly in this book. But this seems to be a fate reserved solely for women. Are horrible, psychopathic vampires really so picky? The reader is forced to confront women being literally ripped apart, drained dry, burned, beaten, raped by a p@nis wrapped in a barbed sheath, as well as just raped en masse and on display, fondled, molested, humiliated and intimidated non-stop (and I mean that almost literally. It is the backdrop of the novel), but only one man was embarrassed because he had to show his bits in an auction and one man was hunted for sport. That's pretty much the complete list of male victims in the book.
I know rape is a pretty common motivator in fiction. It's also used fairly common to ensure the reader knows bad guys are really bad, but I just couldn't take a whole society based on it. I found reading this book extremely uncomfortable, and I read for fun. This was not fun for me.
Then there is Arturo and Quinn's relationship. There is a constant back and forwards between them in which he says he 'I want you', she counters with 'as a slave,' he then counters her with 'no, in my bed.' Now this wouldn't be so horrible except that she's his slave either way. He owns her. There is no indication that (or even social process by which) she could be anything but a slave in Vamp City. So, there's a mixed emotional message being sent here. She's supposed to somehow accept that his wanting to make her a sex slave, as opposed to say a scullery maid, is somehow better or even acceptable. Here's a direct quote about his thoughts on the matter,"If only he could make her a simple slave and keep her, always, in his house. In his bed." Yea, he's not looking for a wife or an equal, just a slave. Lets also not forget that he's not even offering exclusivity. She'd be one of 4. So, I'm having just a little trouble finding the romance here.
Then there is the way this is all cloaked in the illusion of choice. She knows it's and illusion, but she's falling for it all the same. She has no power, no control and no other options. Personally, I'd rather call a spade a spade and get on with it. Yea, I'm so not getting what people love so much about this book.
A lesser disappointment, though still a disappointment, is Quinn's reunion with Zack. He's essentially her sole motivation. She spends 90% of the book trying to rescue him. Are we, the reader, given a heartfelt reunion? No. Just a 'go away Quinn.' Such a let down. Sadly though, having finished it I find myself left with a morbid desire to read the second just to see if it could possibly be as bad. How misguided it that?
I want to give this book a one star...except I can't let myself do it. I really want to. I disliked it that much. But dislike it as I might the writing was still alright and it was still well edited enough to deserve better than a one star. That doesn't make me feel better about it though.

A Blood Seduction A Vamp City Novel Pamela Palmer 9780062107497 Books Reviews
My Thoughts
Pamela Palmer is a name I frequently see running through my friends' feeds on Goodreads, and always with high praise and impressive ratings. I actually own several books in her Feral Warriors series, but haven't gotten around to reading them, yet. Well, after reading A Blood Seduction getting a taste of her writing, that's going to change, and change soon.
This world Ms. Palmer has created has a decidedly Urban Fantasy feel about it, but the actions of the characters living in there make it a dark paranormal story. It's brutal, edgy, barbaric, and there are scenes of sexual violence so anyone sensitive to things of this nature should consider themselves forewarned.
Arturo, the so called "hero" in this book, is one nasty, backstabbing, unfeeling ass. He reminds me of Anne Stuart's Ice heroes in his unfeeling, uncaring, selfish machinations. Truth be told, I'm not sure he's redeemable, but only time will tell.
I truly enjoyed Quinn. She's strong, smart, independent, devoted, caring... she really is a great heroine. I'm excited to see how things with her play out in the next book, A Kiss of Blood.
Fans of dark fantasy and paranormal romance will definitely enjoy this series, but be aware - this has an unresolved HEA.
The Bottom Line
I love Paranormal Romance, especially vampires and shifters, but let's be honest here - the genre has been done to death. It's not often I run across a world as unique and compelling as Ms. Palmer's Vamp City is, so you can bet this is a series I'll keep following. It's fast paced, gritty, sexy, and downright disturbing at times, and I am thrilled to have found these books!
So much potential, so little follow-through.
A Blood Seduction could have been great. I stand behind that. But, it wasn't. It wasn't 'enrage me bad' - which seems to be the response I have seen from quite a few other readers - but it wasn't very good.
Many, many people have commented on the characterization. On how dark the vampires were. That I can handle - I'm all for something other that shiny, tormented, tortured beta boy vampires. Vampires are predators. They have lived a long time amidst other predators. They probably did some ugly stuff to not be blood smears. They probably still do some ugly stuff. They also probably see humans as cattle. This last theme has been hinted at in other books in the vampire genre. This book is just a little more upfront on the concept. Unapologetic. And I liked that.
What I didn't like is how little time was invested in establishing character. I have the sense that the hero's friends, and potentially (maybe) the hero himself (his would be an uphill arc that would be intriguing to witness as he has so far to go), are meant to be sympathetic. Verging right on the shiny beta boys. And yet not enough time is given to developing them and developing our connection to them. I know we were supposed to invest in them - but I'm not making a major purchase after running past the item in the store. I'm probably going to stand there and stare for a long time, research online, really getting a sense of the product. If only the author had let us invest I think I would have had a much better response to this story.
The heroine though... The heroine! Talk about lost opportunities for interesting character development and the chance to invest! She is a scientist who works with blood (established in the first scene). She 'falls into' a world of vampires and that specialization in blood never has relevance? She escapes the world only to return to save her brother - established as the only person she cares about in the world. I get that. But she doesn't come back with something that casts UV or at least a flame thrower? Lighter fluid and a match? Nope. A handful of stakes, a water bottle, and 6 (I remember that detail - SIX) energy bars in a backpack. Because she's a kindergarten teacher or a Walgreens clerk. Wait, no, she isn't - she's a SCIENTIST. Which suggests a level of scientific reason that should have lead to a good plan of attack and some nifty Mr. Science solutions.
And, maybe the worst, she's about 85% passive - letting the story drag her where it will without really digging in her heels at any point. Yes, the Urban Fantasy market is flooded with kick-ass heroines. The genre could use a good heroine who isn't a kick-ass Mary Sue. An every woman, with flaws, who rises to the challenge with 'regular' skills that come out of her character history. But this heroine doesn't fill that niche.
I could go on about other wasted opportunities for diversions from the standard tropes of the overexposed subgenre of Vampire stories - the seeds were there to really do something great - but I'll leave this with what I started with.
So much potential, so little follow-through.
I'd have given it 2 1/2 stars (middle of the road m'eh, but doesn't let you split the difference so 3 it is)
